Local Standrd is a nonprofit, member-supported hyperlocal news org: think Voice of San Diego meets Patch: Founded by John Ness, former EIC of Patch and DNAinfo, the 2 largest hyperlocal news orgs.
The Need: Newspapers that historically did the bulk of the country's accountability journalism are failing 1) as businesses and 2) in attempts to reach users under 40. Meanwhile, digital-first metro startups like Billy Penn, Charlotte Agenda, and Voice of San Diego are staying in the black by keeping their headcount of working journalists low.
Digital news outlets will always seek to be as thin as they can. The only model that can fill the accountability journalism gap left by the local papers is a hyperlocal one.
